I hope this could save time to someone in future:
in octave3.2 with gnuplot 4.2.5 on ubuntu 9.04 I was not able to save
plot as .png image.... Problem was in missing library libgd. I
downloaded it from www.libgd.org, and then I have recompiled gnuplot.
After that everything is OK.
