Grepping for "fclear" in Octave scripts brought up a corresponding CPU-intensive loop in __gnuplot_ginput__.m. I haven't grepped Octave Forge for this.

Thank you for your co-operation on this. Tatsuro's detective work facilitated the diagnosis of the slow-down.
