Hi.  I don't know what "mercurial" means, but I'll add another data  
point and say that it works fine in 3.0.5 running in OS X 10.4.11.

octave-3.0.5:1> for i=1:10
> for j=1:10
> for l=1:10
> a(j,l,i) = 1;
> endfor
> endfor
> endfor
octave-3.0.5:2> a
octave-3.0.5:3
