I've now installed patch and tried reinstalling octave3.0, but get this error:

octave:1> pkg install odepkg-0.6.4.tar.gz

configure: WARNING: no mkoctfile found on path

configure: error: Could not run

error: called from `pkg:configure_make' in file
/usr/share/octave/3.0.0/m/pkg/pkg.m near line 1045, column 2

octave:1> exit

what is the mkoctfile? I can't find it and don't know how to add it to my path
if I do manage to find it.

the "patch" utility is missing on your system install it with the
command

sudo apt-get install patch

or via synaptic
