Printing on letter paper

How can I scale my printed plots to fill an 8.5"x11" (or whatever) page? Printing using: 

> print ("foo.pdf","-dpdf")
gives a tiny plot in the lower-left corner of the page. I've looked through the FAQ and mailing list archives to no avail.
