certainly you can use xwd to capture just a single window. Also, if
you want to do this often (and avoid using Octave's print command),
you may find it convenient to use the wxWidgets terminal in gnuplot,
it comes with a "copy to clipboard" button which allows you to copy
the image into GIMP.
