Even if you're running on AMD64, you could still be running 32-bit kernel
and then all your binaries would have to be 32-bit as well, I believe.
'uname -m' will tell you about your kernel (x86_64 or i686).

On a 64-bit Linux, you could still run either 32 or 64bit octave; 
'octave -v' will tell you which one you have.
