I'm using Octave 2.1.71 (could be 2.1.73) and Octave 3.0 on an eMac with OS
10.4.11. Octave 3.0 was installed with the new easy Octave.app. Download DMG
and drop the octave application and gnu application into the Application
directory.

[~] -bash-2.05b 501$ exec
'/Applications/Octave.app/Contents/Resources/bin/octave'
Cut
octave-3.0.0:1>
Will open Octave 3.0. Cut includes an error w.r.t LOADPATH, which is needed
for Octave 2.1.71, I think, and which I just ignore.

In new Terminal:
 [~] -bash-2.05b 501$ octave
GNU Octave, version 2.1.71 (powerpc-apple-darwin8.1.0).
automatic_replot = 0
silent_functions = 0
octave:1>
Will open octave 2.1.71 and they can be used next to each other. No problems
whatsoever.
