My first guess is that Ekin has octave2.9 package installed (see:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/octave).

Ekin, could you try the following:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get remove octave2.9
sudo aptitude install octave3.0

... or something to that effect. Standard disclaimer applies. ;)
