What are you expecting the derivative to look like for the case "x +
cos(2*pi*x)"? If you are expecting 1 plus the derivative of cosine, I
think that this will not be the case. I think you should be
expecting the derivative of cosine + the derivative of a sawtooth. By
taking the FFT you are making the assumption that the waveform is
periodic.
