I just tried other packages other than audio. I keep getting segfaults.

By the way, my octave version is 2.9.14-3

Have you tried a package other than audio? It is broken for me as well. 

I have most ( ~ 95%) installed on all of my boxen ( 10.3.9, 10.4.11 Intel/PPC). See my install script

 I'm still missing too many prerequisites to try to install the octave-forge-bundle under 10.5.1.
