octave seems to print no echo from script files

Hello,
if I start octave and call a scriptfile from inside it, octave seems to work
for a few seconds, but no echo is printed to the screen. How to turn echo
from script file executing on?
My other question is concerning plots: If I execute a script file directly
from the command line (by "octave script.m), no plot pops up on the screen,
but I can save the plot to an eps file.
At the octave promt, all the above works, if code is entered directly.
