Additional info: typing "help x11" at gnuplot prompt gives:

/usr/local/gnuplot4.3/share/gnuplot/4.3/gnuplot.gih: No such file or directory

It seems the provided gnuplot version does not look for files at
the right location. In my installation, gnuplot.gih is located at
/opt/octave-2.9.13/share/gnuplot/4.3/gnuplot.gih
