Ok, back up a step.. This thread was originally about a problem with pkg
and the need to remove the spaces between variable names and the "=" or
":=" in the Makefiles.. See the messages

and

now you are saying that the same problem exists on your platform for the
build of Octave. So did you build Octave or not? Did you try to build
Octave only after I pointed that the same issue exists with Octave
itself? If this is the case, where did you get your original version of
Octave? Also I don't think that at any time you have specified on what
platform/OS you are attempting to build Octave and octave-forge on, and
this will probably play a part in the solution.

Ok, then you answered part of the above question. Seriously, I do not
think the problem lies with Octave here at all but rather with your
install. Since you are using gnu make, type "info make" and read section
6 of the manual. You'll see that all of the example that are supplied
with gnu make itself include spaces.. Also reading the manual I see no
way that gnu make can be forced to have the behavior you describe, if
there were it might have been a configuration issue.. There is something
seriously wrong with the install on your machine, but I don't think
anyone here can help much in debugging it.. In any case try uninstalling
make and reinstalling the RPM and see if that helps...
