subscript and superscript text in plot titles and axis label

Hi -

I am used to matlab commands where one can indicate subscript or superscript 
notation by using "_" or "^" (i.e. "O_2" or "cm^2"). I noticed that you 
can't do the same thing in octave. Is there a way to put subscript and 
superscript in the legend or axis label of plots?
