Ah well, it indeed was my .octaverc file that caused Octave to go into debug mode in the 2.1.73 version of strmatch:
debug_on_error = 1
I guess this it due to the unwind..protect blocks used in this version's m file. And now I finally understood what the help text was trying to tell me all the time: "s only needs to match A up to the length of s", implicitly saying that both need to match at the _beginning_ not just somewhere. Is this just me being a bit slow or would it improve the help text for others too, to state this more explicitly?
