Yes.  I have some funding to do this work and hope to get something
started soon.  However, this doesn't mean that other interested
parties have to stand by on the sidelines and wait, so if you'd like
to help out, please discuss your ideas on the maintainers list.  Also,
the current plan is that classes won't appear in any snapshot until
after 3.0 is released.

I think most of the standard reasons apply.  Here are some:

  It is a fairly big job.
  No one has done it yet.
  Everyone is waiting for someone else to do it.
  No one who is capable of doing the work has been motivated to do it.
  No one has offered funding to up the priority for it (until recently).
  Etc.
