Scripting sounds the best way to avoid complex typing.
I am trying SCiTE editor, which might be better than what I use now.

I only use the shell command lines for small tasks.
Or, very very long single lines
Anything more significant, I use script files, not
necessarily functions, simply script.
They're easier to edit and put in diagnostic output lines.

Also I use the Sc1.exe editor both for Win98 and WinXP
http://www.scintilla.org
Very small, does NOT insinuate itself into Windows.
It colors, indents, etc, very handy editor also for C++
