I had the opportunity to talk to Cleve Moler (CEO Mathworks and
Matlab `Inventor') at a conference.  I confessed that I used octave
because the license server issues drove me nuts (I didn't mention
that I am an open source zealot).  He looked at me like I was an
idiot (maybe I am, but I shouldn't have to struggle to get purchased
software to merely load), and said that he didn't mind people using
octave because ``it whets their appetite for the real thing,'' by
which I imagine he did not mean octave 3.0.  He gave an excited
demo of the upcoming matlab clustering toolbox.  I did not know at
the time about the MPI extensions for octave, otherwise I would not
have failed to mention he look into it...
