There is a numerical evaluator for the generalized hypergeometric function for
complex
arguments with large magnitudes using a direct summation of the Gauss series
available at the
file exchange:
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/loadFile.do?objectId=5616&objectType=file
It should work as is in octave.
