Indeed that looked easy but I have two small problems.
1. Why do I get installation in usr/local/lib (see below). My
Finder window
was at /usr/local/lib because I wanted to be able to see what
happened
during installation. Installation was so fast there was no time to
switch
from terminal window to Finder window. lib was the only folder in /
usr/local
and I had selected it. For no reason but apparently a mistake.

2. I cannot find download for gnuplot for mac:
http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/download.html gives
Gnuplot 4.0 for the Macintosh *to be* available at
homepage.mac.com/gnuplot/
(or somewhere else, please wait).
Then when I click on the above URL, I'm taken to
http://www.mac.com/account_error.html with the following message:
Our records show that the account you're attempting to connect to
either
does not exist or is currently inactive.

Thank you so much, Gaurav!!!
I got my G5 iMac from Apple less than four months ago, but it seems
absolutely impossible for me to install a standard distribution of
octave due to stuff that has been left out of my system. Your HPC
compilation, on the other hand, is a triviality to install. I've
been
using your 2.1.71 since I bought my new iMac, having wasted
countless
hours trying to install 2.1.72. Fortunately I didn't waste much
time on
2.1.73 before you came to the rescue.

Gaurav Khanna has updated his website
http://hpc.sourceforge.net/
to include binaries for octave-2.1.73 with octave-forge.
Installation
instructions are on the web site.
He built the binaries with OS X 10.3.9, to get around the
"dispatch"
error seen with binaries built with OS X 10.4.5. This should enable
all Mac users to get the latest octave running. Thanks Gaurav.
