Hi Marius,
I have tried to install gnuplot (on the way to octave) on my new iMac
G5 (OS X 10.4.3). So far I have made a mess of it. I am going start
all over again. Gnuplot 4.0 and octave 2.1.71 have been working fine
on my iMac G3 (OS X 10.3.9) for quite a while.
I will have to say that X11 (on which your gnuplot build is
dependent) is a complete mystery to me. I installed X11 on my iMac G3
with no problem. Now I am told
Note 10.4 customers can install X11 by using the Tiger DVD installer
disk.

I have installed Xcode Tools (including the X11SDK.pkg) from my Tiger
(10.4.2) DVD installer disk, but I still have no xterm application.
It's hard to se how I have X11, and I see nothing other than
X11SDK.pkg on the Tiger DVD that might relate to X11.
How do I install X11? Do I need to reinstall a 10.4.2 system on my
machine? That really does seem absurd.
I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.
Regards,
Vic

Did you install Aquaterm?
Aquaterm is a dependency of my current build of gnuplot. See:
