Help with reading mixed data

 Hello,

|   I am having a problem reading my matlab files in octave. The data I  
have is 'mixed' (numbers as well as strings) and in matlab it was read  
by using the command 'textscan'. However, octave does not have this  
command and the one it has...'textread' is running into problems. Is  
there something like 'textscan' in octave that is able to read this  type 
of data?
