Hi, Henry.

I'll try to answer your questions, but perhaps Marius or others can correct me if I'm wrong. :-)

Thanks. I will try this with my new eMac/Tiger OS which should get here next
week. I have the following questions.

1. I assume I need StuffitExpander for the tarballs.

That's what I used.

2. What about Gnuplot? Is is part of the octave 2.1.71 tarball (=item #26).

You need to get Gnuplot 4.0.0-2 (or later). The reason I didn't put this one on my list is because it was already on my system. You can use fink to find out which packages are already installed (i) on your Mac. If gnuplot 4.0.0 isn't there, yes, you need to get it.

3. #13 item (xpm) has no OS 10.4 version, only up to
xpm-3.4k-3-osx3.tar.gz January 15 2005 20:00:27 606.3 kB.

Perhaps Marius can address this. As you said, only a version for OS X 10.3 is there. I downloaded it and tried to install it, but I got an ERROR 2 (whatever that is). I thought that the entire octave installation would fail, but it didn't. My assumption is that until an OS X 10.4 version of it is out, we won't be able to use the xpm functions (whatever they are . . . as I said, I'm very new to this).

4. #17 item szip, which one, difference is 'enc':
szip-2.0-1-osx4.tar.gz May 12 2005 08:58:29 535.7 kB or
szip-2.0-1enc-osx4.tar.gz May 12 2005 09:00:30 536.0 kB.

Once again, Marius is the one to address this. I downloaded and installed the first one (the version WITHOUT the 'enc').

5. #26 item octave, which one, difference is 'lam':
octave-2.1.71-2lamveclib-osx4.tar.gz June 16 2005 21:05:02 129.0 MB
octave-2.1.71-2veclib-osx4.tar.gz May 22 2005 11:16:47 128.9 M .

I installed the 2nd one (WITHOUT the 'lam'). This is the one that Marius recommended I install.

6. #27 item octave-forge, which one, difference is 'lam':
octave-forge-2005.06.13-2.1.71-2-osx4.tar.gz June 19 2005 10:32:13 32.34 MB octave-forge-2005.06.13-2.1.71-2lam-osx4.tar.gz June 19 2005 09:27:53 32.34
MB.

Same thing here -- download the first one (WITHOUT the 'lam')

Hope this helps.

David

Thanks to all the members of this list who were very helpful and
patient in answering my questions. Because of your help, I was able
to get the latest versions of both octave and octave-forge up and
running flawlessly.

If you have any corrections, additions, or suggestions how this
beginner's guide can be improved, please let me know.

Thanks again for your help and for this great resource.
