linking problem with 2.1.70 on GCC 4

Trying to compile 2.1.70 on GCC 4 (on a FC4test2 system) I'm getting a linking error when building the liboctave shared library: g++ -shared -Wl,-soname -Wl,liboctave.so -o liboctave.so . . . (omitting the rest of the command)
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lglob

Any ideas what could be causing this?
