After trying out several "free" CASs (computer algebra systems), I'm currently using MuPAD (http://research.mupad.de/). While not open source, it is free for educational and non-commercial use.

For truly open source, Maxima is good. I got tired of poor documentation and bugs, though.

Group,

GNU Octave is a good replacement to MATLAB. Does anyone know if there
is a F/OSS alternative to something like Mathcad; something like
Mathematica?
