I did that in MATLAB 5.2 for Windows.  Here is what it does in 6.5 R13 
under Linux:

WARNING: Imaginary parts of variables not saved to ASCII file.

In 5.2 for Windows, there is no warning.

Again, not a good system to model Octave after!
