The load/save code was completely changed around 2.1.53, to allow
external types to have access to the load/save functions. The result
was that binary, hdf5 code changes so that it should be forward but
not backward compatiable. The ascii stuff should be basically forward
and backward compatiable except for "string array" and types not
supported by ascii load/save in early versions than 2.1.53...  String
array was not name of the type and so was a special exception, you can
load them for forward compatability, but versions after 2.1.53 will save
with the typename of "string". I imagine that something that that is 
the source of your problem...
