there is a problem with XCode 1.5, preventing you from building
octave...

The only work-around I know of is to downgrade to XCode 1.2. Just
remember to uninstall 1.5 using
/Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl before installing 1.2
Downgrading might upset your g77, I don't know...
