| GNU Octave, version 2.1.53 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.2.0). The most current
| version for MacOS X installable via fink.

That's the problem then. Version 2.1.53 doesn't work on intel debian either:

octave:2> sys = ss2sys(a,b,c,[],0,3,0,{"volts","amps","joules"})
warning: in /usr/share/octave/2.1.53/m/control/system/__sysdefstname__.m
near line 28, column 10:
warning: list objects are deprecated; use cell arrays instead
panic: Segmentation fault -- stopping myself...
attempting to save variables to `octave-core'...
save to `octave-core' complete
Segmentation fault

I would suggest that you install a newer version from source, but there
do seem to have been some problems reported on this list about
installing Octave on Macs lately. The instructions are at
http://wiki.octave.org/wiki.pl?OctaveForMac
