Thanks again. The freshest binary version 2.1.53 from
http://hpc.sourceforge.net/
does install octave & mkoctfile under /usr/local/bin. The other one I was talking about was an "experimental" binary I got from the maintainer of hpc (Gaurav Khanna).

BTW: Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the great octave-developers making nxm matrix operations now possible!!!

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/octave/bin
