how to create predefined variables

Hi:
   I meet a quetion now. I want to built a physical chemistry toolkit by
Octave, but how
 can I create the constants such as the gas constant R(8.314510), the
speed of the light, etc
like pi.If not,I have to create these constants for every function. Can
anybody help me?
