I have written a very brief intro to Octave, which is in chapter 23 of
http://pareto.uab.es/mcreel/Econometrics/econometrics.pdf
This make reference to a bootable CD that has nedit set up to run octave
programs, and a collection of examples. This is a painless way to start using
octave right away. The into is pretty terse, perhaps someone would like to
expand on it. Michael
