octave to C interface

Dear All,

Does anybody know of a write up of the octave to C interface that would save
me delving into the source for examples?  Whilst I am prepared to do this
latter, I would prefer to understand what I am up to!  I tried  google
search but couldn't escape thousands of matches to musical theory or the
properties of various musical instruments.
