The latest versions of cygwin and/or octave don't work well on Windows9x/ME
computers. I tried everything and counldn't get it to work as it does on
Windows2k/XP. The only thing that worked was going back to an old version of
both octave (2.1.36) and cygwin.

I don't know who's to blame for these problems (most likely cygwin), but I
hope they get fixed some day. Almost all of our computers in the lab are
win9x/me based and I hate being stuck with old software.
