I did some hand compiling of m-files using octave values internally
a couple of years ago.  My cumulative sum example got a 6x speedup
from this technique.  To get a good result, you will need to do a lot
more work, and either figure out how to improve octave value handling,
or figure out what the base type is during compile (e.g., uising pragmas
such as

   % int i

or using heuristics such as

   i = round(x)  => i is an integer
