gnuplot not working

I installed octave 2.1.35 and gnuplot 3.7.2 from debian unstable. When
plotting any data, axis labels and titles show up, but no lines or dots. If
I try directly from gnuplot, the same happens. Any ideas what might be
wrong? gnuplot term is set to x11, and the comiple options are
+READLINE -LIBREADLINE -LIBGD +LIBPNG +LINUXVGA +NOCWDRV +X11
