that GSL thing

I was just perusing the GSL page thinking that it consolidated
a lot of functionality in C that I am used to in octave.  Anyhow,
I was wondering if there is
  1) any thought of accessing the GSL from octave
  2) any opinions by the learned here on the merits of the GSL in general.
