Why do not you use netCDF instead of CDF? (See its home page
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf.) I am not an expert on
licenses, but since the netCDF library is part of the main section of the
Debian distribution, it is at least DFSG-compatible (see
http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines).
