  maybe "graw" : 

octave:140> help graw
graw is a built-in function

 - Built-in Function:  graw (STRING)
     Send STRING directly to gnuplot subprocess.


  For fancyer things, you may want to export in fig format and edit
your figures w/ xfig : 

  gset term fig; gset out 'foo.fig'; replot; gset term x11;

  system ("xfig foo.fig");
