In the command line documentation:
octave --help
it says:
Usage: octave [options]
...
--interactive, -i Force interactive behavior.
...
so try
octave > tmp
a=rand(4)
24355
exit
cat tmp
Can it do this? Yes. See the man page for isatty
man isatty
