can't get axis (or hold) to turn off |

This is the same probblem I wrote about before but thot it was
resolved.
When I use the axis command I then have those limits on that graph and
whatever new figure I call up until I exit octave. I've tried
hold off
or toggling hold.
Somebody suggested I see help 'hold'.
I've tried to set autoscale on which is what the documentation sounds
like I want but don't know how.
This has got to be the most frustrating program in existence.
