I have written some reasonable Differential-Algebraic Equation (DAE)
solvers for matlab which should port to octave easily. These routines also
are good for stiff differential equations (because a rapidly decaying mode
is almost indistinguishable from an algebraic equation---the adiabatic
approximation).
You should be able to download them from my web site.
