shared library error in octave-2.0.16 |

Apologies if this has been covered in past mailing-lists. I have successfully
compiled octave-2.0.16 under Linux 6.0 ('configure' then 'make' then 'make
install') and get the following error message when I start Octave:
Octave: error in loading shared libraries: libm.so.5: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory.
Octave is correct, there is no libm.so.5 on my computer, but why is it asking
for it and what do I do to correct the problem?
