Sorry to reply to my own question...
Could the reason be that <octave/variables.h> used to be included in
<octave/symtab.h> in previous versions (2.0.?) ?

BTW, is it a good idea to include <octave/symtab.h> and <octave/oct-map.h>
in <octave/oct.h>? Or are there drawbacks to this strategy?
