I used macsyma about 10 years ago...IIRC it was a very expensive non-gpl
package.
I believe that SciLab for linux (I don't know about windows) supports
symbolic processing.
scilab is available from ftp://ftp.inria.fr/INRIA/Projects/Meta2/Scilab/

There is a code called macsyma or similar, probably under GPL
