There is a strong need for that.
We had a discussion about an optimization toolbox some time ago.
I uploaded a genetic-algorithm to the octave-source-list.
You can download from there.
It handles mutliple n-varibles.
But AFAIK there is no gradient gased algorithm there right now.
Somebody mentioned a code which could be implemented, but
this engagement slept in.
If you are interested browse the list-archive.
If you have something let me know (post it in the source list
and send a mail to this list).
