This is probably an issue that arised in the potato (stable) version of
Debian and has just been solved. This is what the changelog has to say
about it:
* Recompiled against libstdc++2.9-glic2.1 -- This `fixes' the seg.fault
bugs #35250, #34699, and #36076 reported against Octave, and reassigned
to libc6. This should however be fixed in glibc-2.1 itself so that a
glibc-2.0 compiled Octave will run under glibc-2.1.

You could recompile octave by yourself to solve the problem.
