Octave reads MATLAB 4 .mat files. Your "test_mat.mat" is MATLAB 5
(even MATLAB 4 does not understand it). If you use MATLAB 5 you
must save in MATLAB 4 format.
MATLAB is not an open system. Mathworks does not describe their
binary format. Is far as I know there is no other workaround.
