Did you put the command in the background by typing "bg" here?
In csh, what she is doing should work ok, at least until 
the background job trys to read input, or produce output to the
now non-existant controlling tty. I am not sure about other shells.

Back when I was doing development on a project where it took several
hours to build the code, it was common practice for me to type:

        make >& make.out &

right before logging out for the night.  The next morning I could
come in and start the day with a fresh load that had been built
over night.
